JD 400 super sharp $4,500 JD 700 rough but worked $2,500. So you can see the value of a good grinder mixer is much higher than just 4-5 years ago. So if the JD 400 is as clean as you say than the $3000 price is in the market. There just are not many "deals" on good usable grinders now.

What were the Common problems with John 400's
Ok, as far common problems: 1. They can experience hydro creep because the linkage will either get out of adjustment or the bushings will be worn. 2. The right side rod will fail if the engine is not properly maintained with fluids. The oiling system for the engine is a less than optimal design so you need to keep and eye on the oil.

I thinking towing a grinder mixer will make a corner as easy or easier than a trailer hauling the same grinder mixer. BTW I towed the grinder mixer from Amarillo,Tx to 30 miles south of Ft Worth,Tx with no problems. I also remember towing a JD 330 27' tandem disk harrow from Minco,Ok to 30 miles south of Ft Worh which was over 200 miles.
